Suzie performs at The Whole Shebang
April 18, 2007 - The Whole Shebang is a gathering of individuals - a celebration of voices so to speak - and this year the voices are coming from around the globe through the work of Canadian artists. They are featuring the launch of Found, a new collection of poems by Souvankham Thammavongsa, a reading by Judith Thompson from her new play, The Palace of the End, two dances, INK and Shostakovich and their always popular songwriter's circle.

The Palace of the End captures the global effects of the Iraq War. The characters include Lynndie England, the young, female American soldier convicted of torturing Iraqi detainees; David Kelly, the microbiologist who told the BBC that the dossier justifying the invasion of Iraq was grossly exaggerated before dying suddenly; and Najis al Saffarh, a leading Communist in the 1960s and mother of four, who was brutally tortured by the Baathists and finally killed by American bombs. Judith will read excerpts from the monologue written in the voice of either Lynndie England or Najis al Saffarh.

Souvankham, in her collection of poems, Found, draws inspiration from a discarded scrapbook her father kept while in a Lao refugee camp in Thailand during the 1970s . The poems, with their blank spaces and small print, their language so unforgiving in detail that every letter, gesture, break, line and shape becomes for us a place of real meaning, were built out of doodles, diagrams and drawings into a work characterized by elegance and power. FoundŐs bareness is unrelenting ö allowing us to see while holding back much of what we imagine.

Ink, choreographed in 2004, is a deeply expressive work, for a trio of women (Kate Alton, Jessica Runge and Andrea Nann), with an original score composed by John Gzowski. This abstract, contemporary work, inspired by Hornby Island potter and ink painter Wayne Ngan (whose work is brought to life by video artist Samm Higgison), explores a rich, internal world of breath and movement found in Chinese ink painting.

Shostakovich is a solo dance that they are re-creating in collaboration with filmmaker Peter Mettler. Inspired by Dimitri Shostakovich's somewhat maniacal Piano Trio No. 2, Shostakovich explores the haunting despair and devastation of ShostakovichŐs war-torn 1940s Soviet Russia. An early version of the work was presented last year with Andrew Burashko's Art of Time Ensemble. Both dances feature lighting designs by Aisling Sampson and costumes by Cheryl Lalonde.

The program concludes with the songwriter's circle. This circle is about sharing and bringing people together, two of the values that represent the heart of The Whole Shebang. The musicians sit on stage in a half-circle - the whole being completed by the audience. Songs, stories and quite often wise-cracks ensue! The songwriters this year are Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Susanna), Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo), Charlie Angus MP (Grievous Angels/L'Etranger), Josh Finlayson and Andy Maize (Skydiggers).

Lastly, The Whole Shebang is an Asian Heritage Month event. Senator Vivienne Poy who introduced the motion to designate the month of May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada is Honourary Patron of the event.

October 26, 2005 - In a major two-part series for BBC Radio 2 in the United Kingdom, legendary DJ/historian Bob Harris looks beneath the surface to discover the reasons for the emergence of an unique, creative and dynamic Canadian music scene.

"From Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen to Sarah McLachlan, the Dears and Arcade Fire, Canada has had a massive impact on the way the world listens to music," says Harris.

"The Maple Music Revolution" will be broadcast on Oct. 29th and Nov. 5th on BBC Radio 2. The programs are a production of the Whispering Bob Broadcasting Company and will be aired on the BBC2 website.

The programs feature exclusive interviews with such Canadian veterans as Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Leonard Cohen, Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Geddy Lee (Rush), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), and Chad Kroeger and Ryan Peake (Nickelback).

As well, the cream of a new generation of contemporary Canadian artists are featured, including Sam Roberts, Ron Sexsmith, Kathleen Edwards, Oh Susanna, Dallas Good (the Sadies), Hawksley Workman, Sue Foley, Alana Levandoski, Jim Bryson, Buck 65, Luke Doucet, and Pilate. Interviews in Toronto were coordinated by Billboard's Canadian bureau chief Larry LeBlanc.

"What struck me most after being in Toronto doing interviews was the sense of community within the Canadian industry," says Harris "The scene is much less competitive among the musicians than it is in the UK. You get the feeling that musicians there are all supportive of one anotherŐs shared experiences. All the good and bad stuff. The brutal touring on one hand; and the (Canadian funding agency) FACTOR support on the other hand. It all matches up.

"Without exception, every musician we spoke with was in it for the music. That's unique!"

All-Star 2005 Hootenany Tour!!
February 2, 2005 - For years now on Sundays the coastal, cultural hideaway of Victoria, B.C. has been home to a weekly "Hootenany", hosted by the talented roots-country sensation, Ms Carolyn Mark. In the fall of 2002 she sent marching orders to her Ontario cousin Luther Wright to set up a Hootenany show in Kingston, which he did with his trademark panache, fleshing out the ranks with their compadres Oh Susanna, Jenny Whiteley and a smattering of special guests, (including local girl made good, Sarah Harmer). This past summer the whole lot reunited for two sold out shows in the Kingston area, one being a full-moonlit cruise on the Island Queen paddle wheeler that two-stepped its way through the scenic thousand islands accompanied by sweet, original, rootsy music.

The format of the show is a series of three song sets from each featured artist and whoever they choose from the pool of available (and well-dressed) talent. Knowing what we do about the musical beauty that lurks in each city on route, we also intend to recruit a local alt-country star/singer songwriter type or two to grace the stage and the crowd with their charm and talents. Throughout the evening Ms.Carolyn holds court between performances with her hilarious shoot-from-the-hip humour and snappy introductions. Beyond the excellent songs and music the show is just as much about the musicians casualness and comradery, which makes for a very special evening of old-style entertainment.

Now with a shared sense of purpose and a shockingly invigorative zeal, Carolyn, Suzie, Luther, Jenny and their prize posse of pickers and grinners propose to bring this here Hootenany to your town!

European Tour Update
May 1, 2003 - We have just begun our European/UK tour and it is fantastic so far. We played in a beautiful theatre in Bilbao and got to visit the Guggenheim and walk the streets with all the families and eat tapas. We even got stopped by the Spanish police who were checking for Basque separatist terrorists on the highway between San Sebastien and Bilbao. We were lucky enough to be on the Basque radio where we played three songs and had an interview.

Now we are in Norway and again are being treated like kings (and a queen). We played in an old concert hall last night in Bergen called the Logen Theatre. Apparently the 19th century pianist Edvard Grieg used to give concerts there. The production crew were fantastic (they were also in Spain) and made us look and sound superb.

Thank you to all who have made these concerts possible and the lovely folks who have listened with such emotion!
