Short Stories 2007
Pretty Face
(S.Ungerleider)
I love your pretty face
It just brings me back to my younger days
When the world seemed full of grace
You wore your Sunday suit and I wore lace
We drove down to Mexico
It was the furthest place we could go
On $50 and a band of gold
Where we got the guts I'll never know
The kids have grown up now
And moved away
But I can't feel old now
IÕve got your pretty face
Call me a fool I guess
But know that this is the fool who loves you best
The good, the bad, and all the rest
Each day I see your face I know I'm blessed
Some friends that we've known now
Have passed away
But I can't feel now
IÕve got your pretty face
Call me a fool I guess
But know that this is the fool who loves you best
The good, the bad, and all the rest
Each day I see your face I know I'm blessed
Beauty Queen
(S.Ungerleider)
She was a beauty queen
Strapped to a cold machine
Pretty face, but her eyes were mean
From all she had seen
Crowds all came out to cheer
Buy souvenirs and drink their beer
And laugh so loud, so they could not hear
Her dying screams
"Mercy, show no mercy
for, my friends, I would do it all again
Mercy, show no mercy
Flip the switch and count backwards from 10"
They made sure she was good and gone
Cold, grey, and all alone
Switched off the lights
Then they drove on home
To their families
Switched off the lights
Then they drove on home
To their families
Bullies
(S.Ungerleider)
Dry your eyes and walk away
Don't believe a word they say
I will love you anyway
Alone you'll never be
Can't you see they'll cruel and still
You'll fall prey against your will
But I will hold you up until
The bigger man you'll be
Like a bird that flies through sky
You'll look down and wonder why
You ever did pay them mind
To your strength you were blind
They kicked you down and there you fell
They called you little ne'er-do-well
But listen closely time will tell
Alone you'll never be
Three Shots
(S.Ungerleider)
Three shots and you are going down
Three shots and you will lick the dust off the ground
A pitiful ending in a pretty little town
Three shots and you are going down
Gather round, lay your money
Whether you be rough or clean
Billy stepped up and he emptied his cup
An ace slipped out his sleeve
Three shots and you are going down
Three shots and you will lick the dust off the ground
A pitiful ending in a pretty little town
Three shots and you are going down
Old man said "I will shoot you dead
If my gold you aim to steal
For IÕve seen your ways in my younger days
And many a manÕs blood did spill"
Billy said "leave, you got nothing on me
In your big old Stetson hat"
Stagger said "son, don't you flaunt that gone
For soon I'll lay you flat"
Billy let out a shout as the shots rang out
And he fell in a heap to the floor
Stagger said "son, I wonÕt tell you again
Don't mess with my old 44"
Greyhound Bus
(S.Ungerleider)
I'm bound for the greyhound bus
I've got noone left to trust
Kiss my ass, eat my dust
I've got dreams I've gotta dream
So long to the whipping post
Hello to the golden coast
Hang my heart on a hitching post
Where they got clean air to breathe
When I was seventeen, I gave up my little girl
But she stills haunt my dream
In the pocket of my jeans I've got a picture torn and curled
I wonder if she's just like me
Twenty years on the line
Sweating tears just to make a dime
Punch the clock, it's quitting time
There's so much I've got to see
Maybe I will find my girl
My heart will be my messenger
It's wings are town, but man it's pure
And it beats inside of me
When I was seventeen, I gave up my little girl
But she stills haunt my dream
In the pocket of my jeans I've got a picture torn and curled
I wonder if she's just like me
Maybe I will find my girl
My heart will be my messenger
It's wings are town, but man itÕs pure
And it beats inside of me
Miss Liberty
(S.Ungerleider)
I have no wine to offer you today
No finery to offer you today
My father has passed on
And his riches I have won
I've sold my stores to buy a berth on a ship to sail away
I have no wine to offer you today
No finery to offer you today
No more salt to sell
But shed no tears and wish me well
For I will be a gentleman and not a stowaway
I will fly away to the land where rivers shine everlastingly
With gold and silver when I see Miss Liberty
I know she'll keep me
I know she'll keep me
Safe and warm and free
School Yard
(S.Ungerleider)
Smoking cigarettes at night
Listen to my folks' fight
Meet me in the schoolyard
Kiss me so hard
I wear my jeans too tight
Poppa says that it ain't right
Trouble is sure to come
Just like it did for them
But they're sending you to the battlefield
So you try to hide your fear
When you say I'm getting out of here
I'm getting out of here
You leave on a late flight
Black sky, flashing red and white
While I lie in the schoolyard
Where you kissed me so hard
Pretty Penny
(S.Ungerleider)
Girl go down
Milk white and berry brown
Tell me who will be one, two or three
Ribbons fair, wrapped round raven hair
Smile until you find who the winner be
But mother said "no
Don't let your daughter go
Where men's ways are rough and their wills are weak"
But soon she'll see how happy she will be
When I bring a pretty penny back home with me
Girl go down
Milk white and berry brown
A sawbuck to bet before I go
Ribbons fair, wrapped round raven hair
Surely you will tell me win, place or show
But mother said "no
Don't let your father go
Where men's ways are rough and their wills are weak"
But soon she'll see how happy she will be
When I bring a pretty penny back home with me
Holy Roller
(S.Ungerleider)
Kiss me once again, I'm leaving in the morning
For you made me feel like velvet from my heart down to my knees
Love me once again and leave me full of longing
For you fill my head with diamonds shining like a thousand seas
Shining like a holy roller
Falling down upon his knees
Saying push me up to heaven
Oh god almighty please
They say it's only lust that sprinkles fairy dust
But give me some of that stuff before I go
Though I'll be gone again a-rolling on the ocean
I will write you long love letters that are scented like the sea
The sun will rise again and your eyes will slowly open
And I'll fall just like an angel, like a sword into the sea
Falling like a holy roller
Falling down upon his knees
Saying push me up to heaven
Oh god almighty please
They say it's only lust that sprinkles fairy dust
But give me some of that stuff before I go
Billy 4
(Bob Dylan)
There's guns across the river about to pound you
There's a lawman on your trail like to surround you
Bounty hunters are dancing all around you
Billy, they don't like you to be so free.
Campin' out all night on the veranda
Playin' cards 'til dawn in the hacienda
Up to Boot Hill they'd like to send ya
Billy, don't you turn your back on me.
They say that Pat Garrett's got your number
So sleep with one eye open, when you wander
Every little sound just might be thunder
Thunder from the barrel of his gun.
There's always another stranger sneaking glances
Some trigger-happy fool willing to take chances
Some old whore from San Pedro'll make advances
Advances on your spirit and your soul.
The businessmen from Taos want you to go down
So they've hired mister Garrett, to force you to slow down
Billy, don't it make ya feel so low-down
To be hunted by the man who was your friend.
So hang on to your woman, if you got one
Remember in El Paso once you shot one
I'll be in Santa Fe about one
Billy, you're going all alone
Gypsy queens will play your grand finale
Down in the Tularosa alley
Down in La Rio Pecas valley
Billy, you're so far away from home
Billy, you're so far away from home
Filled with Gold
(S.Ungerleider)
Your eyes they shine like the finest of silver
Your heart is pure as purest gold
And they can say that your pockets are empty
But your wealth is as deep as your soul
Don't hide it away for the love that you give is yours to gain
And don't be afraid, for you know, come what may I will remain
And so we walk through mountains and valleys
Our warm hearts against the cold
And they can say that our pockets are empty
But our lives are filled with gold
Don't hide it away for the love that you give is yours to gain
And donÕt be afraid, for you know, come what may I will remain
